An interview with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak

He is the "other Steve", but to geeks around the world, he is the real deal; the man who practically invented the personal computer and changed the world. Steve Wozniak, supreme geek of the 1970s and the maker of the Apple II computer which brought about a worldwide computer revolution, was in Bangalore on Saturday to speak to a bunch of young entrepreneurs and achievers of the Young Presidents Organisation who wanted to hear the story of the most-loved technology brand in the world -- Apple.
Wozniak co-founded Apple Computer (now Apple, Inc) in April 1976 along with Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne. Both Apple I - the company's first product - and the hugely successful Apple II (arguably the world's first fully-loaded personal computer) were designed by Wozniak making him - and not Jobs - the darling of geeks around the world.

Jobs may have created the Apple brand, but it was Wozniak's initial work on the company's first two products that made Apple a multi-million dollar company within a year of its founding. Now 61 years old, Wozniak is still an Apple employee with a minimum pay and goes around the world representing the company - giving speeches and mentoring young engineers.
Wozniak took time out during his Bangalore visit to speak to Sunday MIDDAY. Excerpts from the interview:
What brings you to India?Oh, I was invited by the Young Presidents Organisation to address their group (in Bangalore) and they had gotten in touch via all my speech-people. This is the first time I have come to India; in fact, this is the first time I have been invited which is strange because about two years ago, I did three keynotes all around the world for Infosys (Infosys Technologies, the Bangalore-headquartered software firm). And I kept telling all the top executives that I would love to come to India some day and I never got an invitation until this one.
When you see these young guys in India, do you believe they will break the mould of India being the backoffice hub for the world when it comes to developing world-changing software products?
Yes, I do. And I have a reason. I see a lot of technical enthusiasts, a lot of engineers in Silicon Valley. I see a lot of Indian people. I see a lot of people from Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore. But look at the Indians. They are bright, they are enthusiastic, they are hard-working. They have all the attributes to become successful in Silicon Valley. Some of the great engineers and technologists in Apple and all the other big companies like Google and Microsoft are Indians. So clearly they have got some inner skills and abilities. I think then it just means having a sense of clarity and the level of confidence, and they could make it big.
But is being at Silicon Valley so important for technology innovation?
Not at all. Microsoft did not start in Silicon Valley; it started way up north in Seattle. Nor did Apple. And they could have been anywhere in the world. Infosys is "elsewhere in the world" company. So there are ways that technology companies can start off today with the Internet. A lot of our (Apple's) developers are anywhere in the world. And we hire engineering groups in India; in Russia, everywhere.
What is it about America then that all these young geeks set up businesses and they become super-successful... Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Twitter...You know, there are already a lot of people around you that have done it. And that gives you the confidence to feel you can do it too and not feel scared.
You were not scared of failure? We were not scared. These young people... they are trying something that the formulas of life tell you will not succeed. They think differently and are not scared. They don't think, "What if I don't make any money?" Look, it doesn't matter if you don't make any money. Because you don't have any money to begin with.  Steve Jobs and I did not have any money to begin with. I guess in America, the environment to create successful businesses exists and people around you encourage you to do that.
But that would apply to other countries as well...Obviously. But maybe it's all the resources being in one place in America. It encourages entrepreneurship; risk-taking. For example, I designed a great computer once - the Apple II - and it was going to change the world. But I could have designed a great computer, and not had all the small pieces that fit together to make a great company. Which means you have to hire presidents, operations people, engineers, factory people, marketing people, accountants. You have to do all that in a small company, even if it is just eight people. Or, your computer just won't get recognized. You might win the Nobel Prize for it, but you can't necessarily change the world.
Is that why the Apple II became so successful?Apple II became successful because of various reasons. Steve Jobs had a large part to play in it, and he knew where he wanted to go with it. It was an excellent product. Steve Jobs sought the best things in the world. He knew that I was the best designer, and that Apple II was the best computer, and that's why he wanted both. We were best friends, though. So that helped. It was excellent because it came from my one mind. I controlled the entire environment of how that computer was built. It worked so well that very few parts did very much. Only because, I wanted a computer for me. And it had to be that beautiful.
But the Apple III failed... is it because there were too many people working on it?
Yes, if the guys at Apple had built the machine that they would love, it would have been successful. It came instead from formulas from Apple executives. Marketing people were in charge and some very bad decisions got made, in my opinion. There were hardware failures. You put out a product that has failures right away, and even if you fix it a year later, it just doesn't sell. It's the same thing with any smartphone today. It comes out and it has something horribly wrong about it. You can fix everything wrong about it, and it still won't sell. It has missed its window of opportunity.
But a lot of Apple products were failures, right?Yes, the Apple III was a failure, the LISA was a failure, and the Macintosh was a failure. It was only by modifying the Macintosh hugely and over time that we made it a good computer. And Steve Jobs believed in many of these products.
Is Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs an accurate representation of your relationship with Steve Jobs? How would I know? I haven't read it. I have been so busy in the last two months. I never got around to reading that book. It is on my Kindle, my iPhone, my iPad, on my computer and I bought a hard cover. But I have been so busy that I never read it. But I have lived a lot of it. So I am sure it is accurate. Steve Jobs was himself after honesty in the book, and he did not want the book to be closed or to hide the truth.
We all knew Jobs was going to die some day because of his cancer. But did it hit you hard when it actually happened? It was a shock. It wasn't really hard emotionally because we had expected his death for so long. So it was not something to tear up about. But, ah, Steve Jobs was such an important part of my life that sometimes I tear up.
In popular culture - books, television, even magazines - there is often this talk about how you and Steve Jobs were the best of friends and then one day he threw the remote control you had designed on to a wall and smashed it.
That was about the only incident where he treated me like he has treated other people. The reason he did it was because of miscommunication. He thought that I was against him and Apple. I wasn't. I had made one phone call to John Sculley (the Apple CEO then). All I told him was that during the shareholders' meeting, the Apple II was not mentioned once. All they talked about was Macintosh, Macintosh, Macintosh! And the people that I worked with were hurt. They felt ignored; they felt that they did not matter. I stood up for people who had been ignored. But later I sat Steve down, and then Apple gave me a nice letter and let me start my own remote control company (CL 9) even when I was with Apple. So I am still with Apple. At a small salary, but I am still with them.
Wozniak Trivia
During the height of the Cold War, Steve Wozniak organised the US (pronounced "us") Festival and connected via live video American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts. He became a hero in the then USSR, but not a single American media house covered it. He finally ended up losing $12 million in the venture.
Steve Wozniak was involved in a near-death air crash in February 1981. He lost his memory for close to five weeks.
Steve Wozniak did not finish college in the 1970s. Instead, he reenrolled at the University of California in Berkeley to complete his degree in 1986. He enrolled in the name of Rocky Raccoon Clark (Rocky Racoon was his dog's name and Clark was his wife's maiden name)

Free internet for globe and smart VIA open VPN for android, iphone and winmo!!!

Guys anyone interested to openvpn for android and iphone?
openvpn give free internet access to all android applications and games for free
with the speed of up to 1 mbps

Magic IP's were good, since it is easy and free,
but sometimes it is not working, youtube is laggy
but for openvpn, it is very stable, no youtube lags, downloading was very fast,
10mb files for 3-4 minutes, so what more can you ask for

i will include a trick wherein you can make your android a wifi spot
so openvpn+ wifi tethering = free wifi spot
you can now connect your lap tops, i touch xbox et cetera
what's good with openvpn is that clients are multi servers, so pag nakatay man ang isa may 19 servers to choose from pa, and globe will need to pay millions just to block a single IP

What you will need:

For cyanogen mod
Root your android phone (best is cyanogen 6 and up)
openvpn application (found in market)
openvpn installer (found in market, but if your rom is cyanogen already, don't download this, is may cause abrassion)
config file (airvpn, poknatvpn, mango vpn, puknut vpn)
tun.ko (make sure your android have this one, found on module folder not all android have this)

if you have that all then let's start

1. install openvpn setting
2. go to sd card, and create a folder name it openvpn
3. place the config files on the openvpn folder
4. go to openvpn application then choose preference
5. choose insmod, then tun, then locate the tun.ko (found in modules forder)
6. lastly tap the config file, then wait till it connect
7. sequence of connecting
unknown => wait => auth => get config => add routes => 123.123.123.1 connected as 10.8.2.1 (ex. ip)
8. then connected na kayo, enjoy browsing

for tun.ko location:
guys tun.ko is located in /lib/modules/tun.ko
go to preference in openvpn application. then tap insmod. then location ng tun.ko
bali lagay nyo /lib/modules/tun.ko

Actually the good thing about openvpn is hindi lang browsing, you can play youtube, download in the market, use facebook application, twitter, tapaltalk, games like pocket legends, zenoia, zynger poker, any apps and games na need ng internet connection pwede dito sa openvpn

para sa mga walang cyanogen mod
required:
-busybox
-root access ( rooting is not universal, method of rooting depends on the phone, this is the hardest part)
-openvpn installer
-openvpn settings
-terminal emulator
-root explorer
-tun.ko for p500 (makukuha sa mga sumusunod na kernel: mic_os kernel, der_cavemans kernel at ung GNC p500 & p509 something kernel)

1st) root your phone

2nd) install openvpn installer and the binaries..
to install:
-run openvpn installer using file explorer
-click install > install > /system/xbin/ > /system/xbin/bb
-check this directory if installation successfull: /system/xbin/openvpn <- dapat anjan yang file n yan

3rd) yung busybox kung custom rom ang gamit nyu anjan n yan dapat
-pero kung hndi install nyo.

4th) install openvpn settings
-go to option > advance >
-check load tun kernel module
-set path to openvpn binary: /system/xbin/openvpn
-go to tun module setting > load module using > insmod
-set path to tun module: /system/lib/modules/tun.ko

5th) open terminal emulator
type this (wag itype yung $ at yung #)
$su (press enter adn this will prompt for root access just grant)
#mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock2 /system
#chmod 700 /system/xbin/openvpn
#mkdir /system/xbin/bb

--edit "pag ang busybox ay nasa /system/bin/busybox"
#busybox ln -s /system/bin/busybox /system/xbin/bb/ifconfig
#busybox ln -s /system/bin/busybox /system/xbin/bb/route

--edit "may ibang rom na ang busybox ay nasa xbin eto ang irun nyo"
#busybox ln -s /system/xbin/busybox /system/xbin/bb/ifconfig
#busybox ln -s /system/xbin/busybox /system/xbin/bb/route

#reboot

if an error occurred after issuing such command
please check if busybox is in this directory: /system/bin/busybox
and if openvpn is in this directory: /system/xbin/openvpn

6th) on your sdcard create a folder named "openvpn" w/o the quotes
-put there all your config files
-below are config files from our fellow symbianizer sorry i forgot her name...

7th) create a new apn for those who dont have
no port no ip no authentication
apn: http.globe.com.ph
name: any
-set as default

for auto connect,

1. go to /sdcard/openvpn/
2. create a file name pass.txt
3. place username pw on pass.tct should look like this

username
password

4.then save.
5.edit config file, look for auth-user-pass line
6. then type /sdcard/openvpn/pass.txt, the line should look like this auth-user-pass /sdcard/openvpn/pass.txt

OPENVPN + WIFI TETHERING APPLICATION = FREE WALKING WIFI SPOT

1.Download wifi tethering apps in market
2.Connect openvpn
3. Start wifi tethering application
4. some device like psp, ds cannot connect, but for sure, ipod, itouch , laptops does

OPENVPN + NATIVE WIFI TETHERING (for froyo 2.2 only) = FREE WALKING WIFI SPOT
1. connect openvpn
2. go to terminal emulator
3. type SU
4. type /system/bin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.43.0/24 -o tun0 -j MASQUERADE
5. now you can connect you PSP, NINTENDO ds, PS3

for script , para every time na gusto nyo gamitin yung native wifi at ayaw nyo ng mag type pa nung kung ano ano sa terminal emulator , follow this

try nyo gumawa ng route-up script..
using terminal:
#nano /sdcard/openvpn/up.sh

Quote:
#!/bin/bash
/system/bin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.43.0/24 -o tun0 -j MASQUERADE

#chmod 777 /sdcard/openvpn/up.sh

edit ovpn file sa vpn at add sa line
route-up /sdcard/openvpn/up.sh

This is the over all tutorial,
mejo nakakalito pero worth it pag gumana

This is just to clarify hindi po ito benta or anu man,
we all now that not all people wants to root their devices,
im just offering service for rooting and openvpn configuration sa mga nahihirapan
kasi hindi din naman madaling gawin ito,
pero worth it talaga,
no need for modded apps.

IPHONE 5 MID-AUGUST LAUNCH

Phone 5 may launch in August: Report

.
.

.
.
Apple's much-awaited next-generation iPhone, iPhone 5, may launch in the second half of August, reports CNET.UK.

According to CNET, new job postings for a number of iPhone sales staff in the UK suggest a mid-August launch for Apple's next-generation iPhone.

The post seeks an "Apple iPhone sales specialist" to work for two and a half months in Apple retail stores beginning in mid-August for what recruiter Gekko calls "an exciting project". Gekko is reportedly the recruiter who posted the listings.

"Our client, Apple, one of the largest consumer electronic hardware and software companies in the world are seeking full-time iPhone Sales Staff for an exciting project to work 5 days a week (Tuesday-Saturday) for the period 16th August - 29th October within key retail stores," goes the job posting.

Though listing per se is no concrete evidence of iPhone 5 launch, it definitely shows that preparation for a new device are underway.

According to Apple Insider, Apple has also aligned three key suppliers of gallium arsenide for iPhone 5, as the company prepares to begin mass production of the handset for launch later this year.

According to a recent DigiTimes report too, the new iPhone will launch in the third quarter of calender year 2011. This means that the device could be unveiled anytime between now and the end of September. Earlier this month, it was said that Apple placed orders for 15 million iPhones from manufacturer Pegatron.

Apple iPhone 3GS 8GB Available For Rs 19,990(unlocked)

With the recent launch of the iPhone 4 for a hefty sum, the mid-ranged consumer market was a bit disheartened. This was especially due to the fact that most droids at the price range of Rs 15,000 provide better than average specs and hardware. Now it seems like Apple wants to get into the mid-ranged market segment. The company has now made available, the 8 GB variant of the iPhone 3GS, pricing it at a not-so-hefty Rs 19,990. When you consider the specs of the device, you might just back up a bit, but the cheapest iOS handset deserves a look at the least.

The iPhone 3GS comes with a 3.5" capacitive display with pixel dimensions of 320x480, a 3.15 MP camera, a 600 MHz processor, and 8 GB of internal storage without an expandable memory card slot. In terms of connectivity, the handset is capable of reaching speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps on 3G HSDPA. It runs on iOS 4.3 out of the box, with support for iOS 5 when it is launched in a couple of months from now.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to what you want in a handset. If you want a device which can multitask and do a lot more, you wouldn't consider the 3GS. But if you are looking at a decent battery life and a whole set of features such as access to apps from Apple's App Store, which only Apple can offer, this is the cheapest deal for you. Nevertheless, considering the fact that the 3GS is a 2 year old device (originally launched in 2009) you shouldn't be surprised with the specs. The device is available in select stores across the country.
