yes u can take lcd up to 40" , I have taken 40 ' sony and paid INR 3750/- as duty in delhi airport. as far 32'there is no duty.
there is a max limit of purchase you can make out and enter India. I believe it is Rs.25,000/- just check on that. As for what size you can take in an Airline, it can be any size as long as the weight is not over 32 Kgs. My friends have taken 32" LCD with no hassels. I dunno about bigger sizes.
When you enter India, just before you get down from the plane, you will be given a form, to declare all the goods that you are bringing with you.
Assuming you have stayed for more than a month abroad, then you are allowed to bring goods of value at most 25000 rupees without additional customs. You would be required to have receipts for those goods. Few things like a laptop are exempt from this 25000 limit. But I dont think LCD TV is exempt, and you will be expected to pay customs for the 7000 rupees that exceed the free allowance 25000, depending on import duty for LCD TVs. Of course, if you import any other taxable goods, then you are expected to pay duty on arrival. Always it is good to have receipts ready. I know of a case, when some one from middle east brought a TV, but did not have receipt and ended up paying customs duty for somewhat arbitrary value for the TV, fixed by the customs people. Yes, the arbitrary value fixed by the customs was much higher than the actual value of the TV in the middle eastern country. At the end he paid more for the TV, than to buy the same with official guarantee in Indian Stores.
Normally when we bring things like Digital Camera or a couple of new mobile phones into India, we are supposed to inform customs, but usually we don't. This does not mean they cannot check and ask us to pay the duty, if we bring more than 25000 Rs allowed.
